science at home

Jude had been asking me to "do experiments" quite a lot lately and specifically asked to make an explosion! He had been enjoying the baking soda and vinegar eruption, coloured water and oil and other kitchen science, but this time he was specific - he wanted a big bang! I searched the Internet and found this chemistry kit which is marketed for 10yrs and over (very strict guidelines on the box). I figured it would be ok, as he would have a responsible adult with him the entire time. ;) All in all it was pretty exciting stuff and although Jude was far from happy having to allow his siblings to join in, he got to have his explosion through an experiment creating gas and lighting a match to hear a very faint "pop". Didn't bring the house down, but fulfilled his request in the least. We managed a further 3 experiments over the weekend. One being using lemon as invisible ink, allowing it to dry and then using heat to make the words re-appear. My eldest children really loved this one - they are deeply interested in all spy gear at the moment.

There are over 100 experiments in the kit and you do need to add some other household items, but overall I would say that it was worth it.
Yes, Jude wrote "poo" - what can I say...?
Today Jean declared her plans of becoming an astronaut and going to the moon. She created a space helmet and read up all she could. I wander what she will be tomorrow...hehe

A lot of science going on in our home...
